What a corker!

For a couple of years now I've been collecting corks.  Yes.  Corks.  I know.  I sound like some mad collector who collects mad things like bus tickets and car tax discs.

When I mentioned to Mr J and P that there were people on this earth that collected car tax discs (it's called velology, btw), he became worryingly excited and  even (and this is very disturbing) suggested that one could string tax discs together to make festive bunting.  Facetious little bugger, no?  *raises eyes to heaven*.

Anyway, where was I?  Corks.  Well, for once, dear readers, there was some method to my madness.

I'd discovered this hideous pic in a skip some time ago but it really was the frame that I was after.

I sprayed the frame black and got sticking my rather large collection of corks on the hideous pic and......

Wowsers Trousers!  I've only gone and  made a cork board.

215 corks were used in the making of this!

I alternated rows of wine corks with rows of cava corks
split in half - just for the hell of it
and because we appear to drink a lot of cava

And then, just because I was rather enjoying the gluing and sticking down (very therapeutic, I'll have you know), I stuck some of my vast collection of buttons onto drawing pin heads (loads of examples of these on th'internet):

I even raided Little Miss J and P's lego collection (again) and stuck a few of those on the pin heads.  Unfortunately, these were less successful and only one survived.  I'll have to do more.

I love it!

Lovely, lovely corky shmorky boardy......

Well, that's enough creativity from me for a while.   I'm off on holiday next week.  To Berlin.  I cannot wait.  Yes, I'm going to miss the whole Diamond Jubilee hoo haa.  Not that I care a hoot because it's actually MY birthday.  Yeh, Queenie, MY great big fat 50th birthday.  So there!

Auf wiedersehen xxxxx

  3. You are a woman after my own heart. Although do you have any ideas what to do with a load of screw top wine caps? Somehow we rarely seem to get the stuff with corks (evidently we are cheap). The cork board and button pins look brilliant.

And happy Jubilithday! I would just tell the kids that the country is celebrating you, and that's what all the bunting is about!

    Thanks for linking up

  4. How lovely. Mmm So how long did it take to collect those corks? We drink plenty of wine in this house but it tends to be of the cheap screw top variety. Love the buttons on drawing pins too. What kind of glue did you use.

  12. This is brilliant! I have had a similar idea floating round my head for some time now but am still searching for a suitable frame. I have to say I think Mr J&P could be on to something with the tax disc bunting, I think it'd look fab!

Have a wonderful 50th Birthday! xxx

  13. It looks great ... I used to make these and can still remember with dread how hard it was slicing the corks (and very nearly my fingers) in half! Love the button pins too.

  21. Flipping Ada, you had me worried then for a bit. I thought you were collecting corks just for the sake of collecting corks and had joined The Mentallers. I'm ok now that I've seen that you made something out them! Phew!
Hurrah for you being 50! Join me in being an old fart! Anti wrinkle cream, hold you in swimsuits and linen trousers with elastic at the back, all things I have bought today because I am an old gimmer!
Enjoy your holiday and your celebrations!

  23. I'm with Lakota, how do you find so many bottles of wine with corks rather than screw tops? Do you choose them deliberately? Or are you a Cava/Prosecco girl? Good excuse to get on the fizz anyway!
Great idea and a fantastic board. Get you, Mrs Crafty!
Have a great time in Berlin and enjoy your big fat birthday, Loo! xxxxx

  24. Oh I like this! I once went into a restaurant that had the most enormous clear glass vase that they were filling up with corks and it just made a brilliant display. I've never thought of collecting tax discs before but actually...... seeing them all like that in the picture they do make a rather interesting display!

  40. Gorgeous!! I'm a British expat living in Southern California wine country. I've seen a few of these cork boards and think they're such a good way to remember those celebratory bottles of wine. Of course, I've seen entire walls done from wine corks too - so maybe you've an excuse to keep on drinking!
