A Mishmash of Style. Part 1

At J and P Towers, today, we're having a little spring clean!  Or, in the words of Mr J and P, we're having "a good poke around in corners that aint never been poked before!"  Yes Sireeee.

Our home style, in case any of you darlings were wondering, is a little bit modern, a little kitsch, a bit vintage, a little ethnic and a little bit embellished.  Yes, you guessed it, it's a  mishmash of styles.

I thought I'd show you a few of my favourite things dotted around the house starting off with some modern objets.  First up is a cardboard stag.  Yes, you did read that correctly, here it is:

I bought the cardboard stag kit for Mr J and P two Xmases ago and he assembled it all by himself.  Didn't he do well?

A very modern cuckoo clock which permanently has the time of 10.15 on it because nobody in this house ever remembers to put in a new battery.

The standard lamp in our front room.  The base is a cheap one from Ikea and the shade is from Graham and Green, one of my favourite online shops. The shade is made from wallpaper by either Osborne and Little or Cole & Son, can't remember which now.

Very modern flying ducks in our downstairs loo.

Our loo walls are a calming shade of green NOT this strange mustard colour.  I blame the camera....

A modern take on the sunburst clock by Karlsson:

Now, people go on about Scandinavian style which is great but I'm a keen fan of the Dutch style.  We have Dutch friends and the home of one couple, in particular, is a wonderful mix of modern and kitsch (next time we go visit I'll take photos to show you, you won't be disappointed).  Looking around our house, my favourite kitschy items happen to be presents from our Dutch friends.  Yes, we're now looking at our kitsch stuff, (come on, keep up at the back please).  Take a look at this wonderful holder which we use for storing paper towels but which can also be used for toilet rolls or even magazines and newspapers:

Made from delicious Mexican oilcloth, it's from a shop called Kitsch Kitchen.  Check out the link here and drool over the bright plastic and oilcloth goodies.

I love my squirrel knob (er hem):

It's from Pakhuis Oost, it's well worth looking at their website here if you don't know it already.

I'm not sure that this is really kitsch but I'll bung it here anyway.  It's a Delftware milk jug.  It's sooo cute, I love it:

Look at this lovely photo frame.  It's got nearly everything a body could ever desire.  Ric-rac, pompoms and.....

CLOGS.  With Ribbons.  Swoooon......

An itsy bitsy photoframe with an equally itsy bitsy piccy of Little Miss J and P:

Well folks, that's it for one post.  Don't get too excited now, but I'll be posting Part 2 in a few days time.  I bet you can't wait.....

  1. Hi Loo
you've got some great stuff in your house...I especially love the stag head, the cuckoo clock and that gorgeous sunburst clock. I found an old teak one a while ago, famous but can't remember makers name right now (and it's in the shed!)It cost two dollars! I was thrilled.
I'm like you and can't be pinned down to one style...we're called eclectic Loo, NOT mishy-mashy!
Looking forward to part two x

  2. Must remember that one! "a good poke around in corners that have never been poked before!" it is liken to our "flat surface syndrome"! This is when you have cleared a table that has been covered in paperwork/magazines for weeks/months and then few days later the pile starts again!!

  3. I don't know what I like best. I love it all and I think it is better that it's eclectic. The cardboard stag is just awesome! The cuckoo clock is darling and just how great is that photo frame! Mini cloggs, yes please.

Thank you very much for my award. I'm way behind in posting this week but it will be up in the next day or 2.

  4. Thank you, Loo, for allowing to nose at your bits and pieces (that sounds rude, not intentional). I love seeing what other people have in their homes.
I, too, have a very eclectic style. Most people call it clutter though.
I hope that your spring clean is going better than ours. Three days ago we started on the kitchen and we are still at it. I wouldn't mind but it's tiny, i thought we would be done in a day. Just goes to show how trampy we are...

  5. I'm so glad we don't live near one another as I fear there would be fisticuffs. You and I share a taste for outrageous ecclecticism, mad prints and quirky bits. I love all of it and I cannot wait to see more. xxx

  12. Mishmash of Style? I think you should go for Eclectic Chic! Ha!! Everything sounds fab when it's got Chic after it.

My parents had a cow creamer like that. They bouhg it when I was about 10 or 11 and muy brothers and I fell about laughing, thinking that the cow was being sick. And then we though how hilarious it would be if the cow was divided into two. The cream could come out of its mouth, and then, say chocolate sauce, would come out of a separate hole near its behind. Errr....I think you get the picture. We found it hysterically funny, let me tell you!

I love that Stag's Head. Too cool for school...

  16. OMG I have that saw blue & white cow creamer! I bought it at an estate sale last summer. I like the little glimpses of your home, have you ever posted shots of your interiors before? (I'm curious what your furniture looks like too)

  17. I'm totally loving your style, I could go mad in Graham and Greene if the opportunity arose! And I love Kitsch Kitchen. Thanks for Pakhuis Oost recommendation - will check it out forthwith.

Our stag head is aluminium, I especially like him at Christmas when he has baubles hanging off his antlers.

I'm glad it's not just me who feels a bit slutty when it comes to be being faithful to a look - I love a lot of vintage, but there are some fabulous modern designs too. Sometimes I want a country kitchen, sometimes ultra sleek. I think the only solution is many houses to decorate in different ways... (must do lottery) xx

  30. Interesting that you collect Dutch stuff. The only stuff I've thrifted was a set of cool colorful cups made in Holland. I posted about them here:

Let me know if you know anything about them! Thanks!
