Music of the Moment: An Occasional Post

The Best of the Mamas and the Papas

I have a tendency (some uncharitable people say that I should put the word "annoying" in front of "tendency") to play certain albums and songs over and over again ad nauseum until even I have been known to get heartily sick of them. Anyway, at the moment I can't stop playing The Best of the Mamas and the Papas.

In fact, I've been playing it BC and AC - that's Before California and After California (see post here in case you haven't a clue what I'm going on about). Mr J and P says that this post should be entitled "Calfornia Droning" as it is just an excuse to go on about our trip to California - not true, dear readers.

Anyway, back to the Mamas and the Papas. The gorgeous harmonies, so rich and multi-layered, and Mama Cass' beautiful voice - aaaah lovely. I can't stop singing, very loudly, (another tendency of mine) to all my favourites: California Dreaming, Monday Monday, I Saw Her Again Last Night, Dedicated to the One I Love, Look Through My Window, 12.30 (Young Girls are Coming to the Canyon) etc etc.

Makes me want to don a kaftan and wave my arms in the air like I just don't care......

How 'bout this for a "fascinating" fact. Their first album If you Can Believe your Eyes and Ears originally had the cover below featuring the group in a bathroom sitting in a bath with a loo in the corner. Unfortunately, the album with this cover was pulled from stores after the toilet was declared "indecent"!! Yes. Really.

For some bathroom frolics, check out this video of the band with some groovy dancers gyrating in bathtubs (fully clothed I hasten to add) to the strains for California Dreaming. Classic.

  1. Priceless, it's reading little gems of wisdom like this that makes blogging worth while! Go girl get those arms waving.

  2. The *loo* was declared indecent? What about those indecently long legs clad in skinny jeans and kinky boots, eh? That what's I'd like to know.

If I had a funny blogger award to give. It would go to you!! And that's a compliment - I mean funny haha, not funny weird.

It probably doesn't work if it needs explaining, does it?! Now I'm just rambling....

Anyway, I agree. Here's to The Mamas and The Papas. *chink* and to singing loudly *chink chink*.*

  3. I'm exactly the same - I like to listen to a new album quite a few times in a row and then if I decide I love it it gets played to absolute death for a while. It does mean that when I eventually rotate the cds I discover stuff I love but haven't listened to for ages which is always really fun.

  5. One of my favourite bands ever, in fact, Mama Cass has to be a style inspiration.
    I'm just as bad.

  6. Hee hee, indecent, I love it. I'm a big fan of The Mama's and Papa's myself so I know where you're coming from.

On the subject of typewriter ribbon I did a search on google and there doesn't seem to be a problem getting some. Go buy it if it's still there.

  9. Hi Loo
Thanks for the lovely comment, the top is actually bottle green, just my lazy photography in very poor light. I feel a bit of a fraud really, 'cos it was so easy to make.

  12. That's an album I need to get. I love their groovy sound. I know that when I sing, I am happy and the louder I get the happier I am.

All your craft on your last post is awesome. I just love the wreath idea. I might just try that with my scraps.

    Keep on a movin & a groovin
